KELLY COLKER

Cougars' Colker has a mound of talent

NEWARK — Kelly Colker is the type of pitcher every coach would love to have. That's not just because she entered the week with an undefeated record in Mission Valley Athletic League play or because her ERA sits comfortably below one run a game — it's also because of the way she approaches the game.

While most pitchers are happy with just getting outs, Colker has an idea what she wants to do with every batter.

"I just want to strike them all out," she said.

While her strikeout per/inning ratio may not be the most dominant in the league, she is averaging more than one an inning.

The intense demeanour Colker brings to the field has paid huge dividends for Newark so far.

Before the week began, she had allowed just two earned runs while compiling a 6-0 record — not bad for a pitcher who was a relative unknown going into the season.

"I coached her when she was a freshman, and she has come so far since then," said Newark's first-year varsity coach, Clare Alcott.

Having a dominant pitcher has become commonplace at Newark. Cougars fans were spoiled with play of Letty Olivares the past four years and now have another star in Colker.

Against Irvington on Tuesday, she limited the Vikings to just one run, and it was unearned.

Outside of MVAL play, Newark has been in some hotly contested battles. Colker and Foothill's Cal-bound Val Arioto engaged in a 1-0 duel in the first game of the year, putting Colker on the map.

Lowe fulfills dream

South Tahoe High player signs with Sonoma State

April 20, 2007

By Jeremy Evans
All Danielle Lowe ever wanted to do was play college softball. Now she'll get her chance.

The South Tahoe High senior signed a national letter of intent on Thursday with Sonoma State University, a NCAA Division II school in Rohnert Park that is rebuilding under second-year coach Jaime Wallin. An all-Sierra League outfielder last year, Lowe is receiving a partial athletic scholarship to play for the Seawolves.

"I always wanted an opportunity to play in college and up here not many people get that chance," said Lowe, who had an on-base percentage of over .700 last season. "I went down there in the fall, played with the team, met the coach and I loved the school right away."

Lowe is the first STHS player since 2002 graduate Jill Barna to receive a softball scholarship. Coming from a small town in the Sierra Nevada, it has been a difficult road for the speedy Lowe to get noticed by colleges.

Lowe also drew interest from Division I St. Mary's College in Moraga.

"I want to start next season, but what I'm really looking forward to is getting better," said Lowe, who will play for the Bay-Area based San Jose Lady Sharks' traveling team this summer. "I didn't want to go to a huge school and that's why I think Sonoma State is a great fit. It's a smaller school so I think I'll fit in."

Apache to play softball for Hornets

Lowe: Signed letter of intent with Sacramento State on Thursday.

Caitlin already has her life planned out.

The Vallejo High senior will go to law school - Bowling Green, Stanford or the McGeorge School of Law to be exact - and will become a highly-paid corporate lawyer (a company like IBM will do).

But first things first; She's got to get her BA. And she just found the college that will give her one. Lowe signed a letter of intent Thursday to play softball at Sacramento State University beginning next year.

"It feels awesome," she said. "It feels really good to just sit back and wait for college to start and for the season to begin."

Lowe's .438 batting average has helped get them there. So has her blazing speed, which has led to four home runs and 10 runs scored.

"She's just really killing the ball right now. When we need that extra base hit - or any kind of base hit - she's really come through for us," Vallejo coach Nick Solovieff said. "She could be the fastest baserunner  that I've coached in my seven years at Vallejo High."

That speed also netted her the scholarship, which is based on both her athletic prowess as well as her abilities in the classroom. She also has a 3.5 grade point average.

While playing for the San Jose Lady Sharks ASA team last summer, she caught the eye of Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan.

"I just turned my head and she was flying around second base headed for third. And I thought, 'Who is that young lady?' " Strahan recalled.

Though she made the Times-Herald All-Region team as a catcher last season, Lowe has taken on a new position this year. She has been moved from behind the plate to centerfield, mainly to take pressure off a bothersome hurt knee.

"That's the neat thing about her: she's so versatile," Strahan said. "She can play outfield, she can catch, she can do a number of things and that's really attractive."

"I'll miss playing with my high school teammates. I've known most of them since I was 10 or 11," Lowe said. "But it'll be nice to play with some new people I've never met before."

ARIANNA  ROACH

I wanted to let you know that her high school team took second in the Cloverdale tournament last weekend and she made the All Tourney team. She actually hit well also going 3 for 5 in two games with a 2 run double.

HMB takes CCS pitching duel

REDWOOD CITY — Batter after batter from both dugouts kept trudging back to the benches Wednesday night as Castilleja freshman Sammy Albanese and Half Moon Bay sophomore Leah Garcia got all wrapped up in a softball pitching duel.

Albanese, a Belmont resident, struck out 12 in six innings, but Garcia fanned a season-high 15 in seven innings to lead Half Moon Bay (18-10) to a 2-1 win over Castilleja (14-8-1) in a first-round Central Coast Section Division III playoff game at Hawes Park.

"All my pitches were working pretty well tonight, but the curveball was the best," Garcia said. "My catcher, Regina Sena, called a great game, and the defense did the job."

Sena was a catalyst on offense as well. With a 1-2 count, she got all of a fastball and drove it to the fence in left-center for a solo home run for the Cougars' first run.
